Slippery Elm is used in healing salves for wounds, boils, ulcers, burns, and skin inflammation. It was also taken orally to relieve coughs, sore throats, diarrhea, and stomach problems. Slippery elm contains mucilage. Mucilage coats the tissues it comes in contact with to soothe inflammation and irritation. Moreover, slippery elm contains other compounds, such as antioxidants and various polyphenols, contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects.
